Our Story

Founded in 2019 by Laura Rosso as a non-profit charity, ThanksGiver Schweiz began as a single food bank in Birsfelden, Baselland. Today, it has grown into a vibrant network of 11 food banks, sustained by the passion and commitment of over 150 volunteers.

In Switzerland a third of the food we produce – more than 2.8 million tons – is wasted, which equals 330 kg of food waste per person per year. This food waste is not only an unnecessary waste of resources it has also far-reaching effects on the environment and climate. At the same time more than 8.7% of the Swiss population lives in poverty.

Through a network of weekly food banks ThanksGiver Schweiz turns food excess in food access by providing high-quality and nutritious surplus food items to low-income individuals and families.

Our Mission

Turning excess into access
We recognize that the challenges of food insecurity and environmental sustainability are deeply interconnected.

Our Vision & Strategy

Nourishing our communities nationwide

We aim to become a sustainability action hub that spans the nation. Enabling a circular food economy that benefits both communities and the environment by addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable practices within Swiss communities.

Local partnerships
We partner with grocery stores, producers, local government offices, businesses, and farmers across Switzerland to rescue surplus food to ensure that fresh nutritious options reach those in need while minimizing waste.

Meet our Team of Dedicated Volunteers

Founder & CEO

While traveling the world as a make-up artist, I often volunteered with local charities along the way. That’s how I really came to see the power of one person, with the right mindset and lots of energy, to make a difference.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, I saw a chance to bring two of my passions together: helping people in need and reducing food waste. That’s how ThanksGiver Schweiz was born. What started as just an idea has grown into a network of food banks, aimed at closing the gap between food waste and food insecurity.

The name ThanksGiver Schweiz reflects the spirit behind it all – being thankful for what you have and sharing it. And seeing where we are today, I can honestly say: I’m so grateful.

Website & Graphic Design

With a degree in art history, I’ve spent my career working in design studios and advertising agencies around the world helping corporations, creative organizations, schools, and nonprofits shape their visual identities. At ThanksGiver Schweiz, I take care of the website and graphic design, which is the perfect way to do what I love while supporting a cause that really matters to me.

What I enjoy most about working at ThanksGiver Schweiz is with the diverse and motivated group of people. We all come from different backgrounds, but we share the same goal: reducing food waste and helping people in need right here in Switzerland.

Food & Waste Expert

I’ve been volunteering with ThanksGiver Schweiz for nearly five years, starting out by helping with deliveries, packing food bags, and distributing items every Thursday. Over time, I’ve taken on more of a focus around food waste and sustainability — areas I care deeply about both professionally and personally.

I first got involved because I wanted to give back to the community, something that was always highly valued in my family. As a qualified nutritionist with a strong interest in sustainable food systems, this felt like a very real way to help. What I find most rewarding about working with ThanksGiver Schweiz is the sense of community and shared purpose in being part of a hands-on team that supports people directly.
