A Waste-Free Christmas Starts with Intention

Christmas gatherings, office parties, and buffets often end with trays of untouched food. One fifth of all food produced for people is lost or wasted every year, equal to around one billion meals. That hurts the planet, wastes money, and misses a chance to help others.

Here are more ways to celebrate with care at home, work, and community events.
Plan realistically
Estimate portions based on actual guest numbers. Portion calculators can help you avoid over-catering.
Offer festive goodie bags
Keep takeaway boxes or ask guests to bring containers so food goes home, not into the bin.
Make leftovers part of the plan
Turn leftovers into soups, curries, frittatas, sandwiches, or pies. Make stock with bones and vegetable scraps.Freeze what you cannot use right away. Hard cheese, sliced bread, and cooked meals all freeze well.
Donate what is safe and unused
If you end an event with untouched food, donate it. Local food banks, community fridges, and charities can get it to families who need it. ThanksGiver Schweiz food bank always welcomes appropriate donations.
Compost what cannot be saved
Scraps and peels can enrich soil instead of filling bins.
Choose seasonal and local
Seasonal vegetables taste great, cost less, and support Swiss growers.
Share your leftover ideas
If you have a favorite leftover recipe, share it with someone. Inspiration spreads quickly.
Food is a gift. This season, let’s honour it through mindful cooking, thoughtful planning, and community support.
The ThanksGiver Schweiz team wishes you a warm, happy, waste-free Christmas.
